Lost Property Service Vienna Airport

Vienna Airport has replaced the existing Lost & Found system in the Lost & Found office with Nova Find, Europe’s leading lost & found solution. Since its introduction, every second found object can be successfully returned to the owner.

Two components lead to success

Vienna Airport’s new lost and found solution consists of two components. The backend system is used by Lost and Found staff to record and manage lost and found items. The public search screen (www.viennaairport.com/fund) is available for passengers and customers of the airport to record loss reports.

Passengers and customers can create their own loss reports for lost or forgotten items on a modern interface on the Vienna Airport website. Thanks to responsiveness, the task of a loss indication is possible both on the smartphone, tablet and desktop. Thereby, the user has access to the object categories and characteristic descriptions optimized for an airport operation The loss report entered by the passenger or customer is automatically compared with all existing lost property reports. All finds made either on the airport grounds (Ground Services), in arriving aircraft or on the City Airport Train are recorded by staff at the airport’s Lost and Found office in Nova Find. In the event of a potential hit, the passenger or customer is notified immediately.

“The more passengers we record, the more is forgotten or lost. Smartphones and tablets are the most frequently left behind, and we find a forgotten passport three to four times a day. Since the successful introduction of Nova Find, the return rate has been 50 percent and is constantly increasing. Together with RUBICON, the previous lost and found process has been improved and the satisfaction of our passengers and, of course, our employees in the lost and found office has increased significantly.”

The lost and found

The backend system, which is used by the Lost and Found staff, represents the central system and thus the heart of Nova Find. Here, in addition to the operational work of recording lost and found reports and looking at lost and found reports, the matching of matching found and lost reports is also done. The intelligent configuration allows an individual creation of categories depending on the use case, so that the hit matching achieves the best possible result. Based on the categories, the system automatically determines which loss report corresponds to a find report – and vice versa – regardless of the input language. The language-independent entry of loss reports significantly supports communication with passengers and customers and also promotes the quality of data capture. In addition, extending the match to all participating regions and organizations (e.g., transit agencies) will significantly increase the return rate.
